This course is centred on design thinking and guides students to pay attention to the challenges the elderly facing in retirement. Through studying gerontology, students designed a “Golden Minds Playstation” to increase their physical and cognitive activity, so as to help reduce the risk of dementia.
At the beginning of the class, students empathised with the daily challenges faced by the elderly through interviews. These challenges may include loneliness caused by a reduced social life after retirement, as well as lower concentration levels resulting from the frequent use of electronic devices. Based on the information gathered, students worked in groups to conceptualise and design a game station that responds to the needs and pain points of elders. During the making process, students learned game design processes and basic programming concepts and used various electronic components and materials to construct the game station. Students first created a mini-prototype for testing, identifying problems, feasibility, and areas for improvement in the game design before creating a full-scale prototype. Through multiple rounds of prototype making, testing and refinement, the game station gradually came to life.
In the final class, students invited the participating elders and parents to try out their game stations in person. Not only testing their reaction, their authentic feedback also helped students refine their designs, thereby deepening the learning outcomes. With the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), the system collects gameplay data from the seniors, which helps analyze their health and reaction trends, giving the learning outcomes greater practical value.
